Founded in 1996, the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) returns once again this year across the city, and Burn Studios and ambassadors - including Richie Hawtin - will be in attendance with a whole variety of different events and interactive sessions, all based around the dance music community.
As part of Burn Studios' involvement in the event, there will be a Burn Studios Bootcamp at ADE on Friday October 22. The Bootcamp will be made up of four separate Masterclasses covering different topics and subjects and focusing on "The Art of Programming", "The Art of Collaboration", "The Art of Remixing" and "The Art of Voxplosion". Excitingly, we can also announce that a variety of M-nus artists will host each session, along with 20-30 gifted up-and-coming producers and remixers from across Europe. See below for a full run-down of what's happening when and with who!
The Burn Studios online audiotool will also be launched at the event, with minimal tech legend Richie Hawtin at the helm. More on that here.
BURN STUDIOS BOOTCAMP MASTERCLASSES
JPLS - Masterclass Session - The Art of Voxplosion:
JPLS' analogue attitude is stripped down amongst the ever-growing digital landscape of expanding sound fields. Recording as JPLS with recent net releases on Clever and Redevice he made his first M-nus appearance on 2006's min2MAX compilation, also performing live in Detroit in May for the min2MAX launch showcase. Jacobs' sound falls into a range of dub-punched techno, while under the minimal aesthetic from the top down. His mode of procedure emphasises the cerebral effects of 'less is more' and works with precision versus surrounding his sound with clutter.
Magda and Marc Houle - The Art of Collaboration:
Magda remains refreshingly free from the burden of expectation. She has put her name to a production or two, but the reason that she has been among the world's most famous techno DJs of recent times has nothing to do with anything other than what she puts forth in a live setting. Starting out with the encouragement and instruction of legendary Detroit techno figures such as Daniel Bell and Claude Young, she has since become one of the most in-demand artists on the M-nus roster. With her debut solo album From The Fallen Page on the horizon by end of October 2010, look for her star to continue to rise.
A mainstay of the M-nus camp,Marc Houle pushes the boundaries with his output, always adding tweaks and twists from analogue synths, obscure sounds and an onslaught of vocals and playfulness. He is a producer not satisfied with following guidelines set by other techno practitioners. His take on electronic music is one in its own, a personal sound that draws upon his early influences from industrial, retro and Detroit, along with a modern vision of path-finding techno. His latest venture for the label Drift, although inspired by the coldest moments of the year, is undoubtedly hot as fire.
Richie Hawtin and Ambivalent - The Art of Remixing:
British-born and Canadian-raised, Richie Hawtin came to fame under the Plastikman moniker in the 1990s. He was an integral part of the Detroit tech scene of the same era, and the underground parties he organised - in Windsor, Ontario and in and around Detroit - could best, but not only, be described as legendary. His last record of fresh material as Plastikman was 2003's Closer, but in 2010 the minimal tech luminary rekindled the pseudonym to play a series of blistering live shows across the world. In late 2010 Hawtin releases a full retrospective of his career as Plastikman, an 11-CD, DVD and vinyl combo with all six albums under the name, as well as unreleased remixes, lost tracks and hard to find material, entitled Arkives.
Currently working out of Berlin, Kevin McHugh has spent the last decade living in the German capital or New York and in a sense; these two metropolises represent the contradiction at the heart of his Ambivalent persona. On the one hand the reckless freedom and hedonism of the Berlin subculture, on the other the more considered, conceptual approach of its New York counterpart. His idiosyncratic sound lies between the two, a precarious balancing act that manages to infuse stripped down, finked-up minimal techno with a distinct sense of purpose. In 2010 Ambivalent releases another two records in Rumors and Down.
Gaiser - The Art of Programming:
Following a string of finely-crafted M-nus EPs, Gaiser has become one of the most exciting and sought-after producers of his generation. With an instinctive feel for the intricate mechanics of minimalist sound sculpture, his music contains the perfect balance between rhythmical energy and sonic finesse and nowhere is this more apparent than on his thunderous debut album Blank Fade. What always stands out about his performances is the ability to make an immediate connection with the audience, soaking up the vibe and playing according to their reactions. He's a musician who lives off his instincts, channelling his moods and emotions directly into his computer, translating new experiences and sensations into sound. There simply is no other way.
