Known for his humble approach and perma positivity, Werni Stock has rippled some serious frozen waves in the Europe – and now international – shred scene.
Born and raised in Tux, a tiny town at the end of Austria's Zillertal valley next to the Hintertux Glacier, Werni Stock was destined to shred for a living. With year-round riding and Europe's best parks on his doorstep, the 23-year-old first stepped on a snowboard aged 12 – and has been addicted ever since.
With two brothers and one sister, the family ran a hotel in resort, which meant more riding time for Werni – who picked up his first sponsor, the Insider Sportshop, after just a couple of years. Things then stepped up steadily as he progressed through the smaller TTR Contest circuit, where he won second place at the Air & Style Rookie Challenge in Munich at age 19.
A product of his environment, Werni is a master of massive jumps (thanks to one of Europe's most progressive parks in his home resort of Mayrhofen), and is now taking these honed freestyle skills to the vast backcountry playground of the Zillertal valley and beyond. Also, after a couple of local film projects for podcasts and online shops, Werni has finally been signed up with a film crew to push his passion for riding even further – as the latest shipmate to join Pirate Productions.
The Zillertaller super stomper is also the freshest recruit to the Burton and RED team roster after a hugely successful season so far this winter. From opening with 6th place at the Oakley Shaun White Air & Style in Beijing, to 2nd place at the Relentless Big Air Stuttgart in December, Werni then headed to Japan to film with fellow Burn Unit Gigi Rüf and the Pirates. Now, with some big contest results under his belt, he's leaving the icy landings behind and looking forward to airing off lips, chutes, and cliffs in the backcountry.
